Why Choose NCH Helathcare System for your Internal Medicine Training ?

Our goal is to provide a comprehensive quality experience in Internal Medicine. We have all the resources and support to achieve your goal. Upon completion of your training, you will have had exposure and education in all aspects of ambulatory and inpatient medicine.

Is the program affiliated with a University?

Yes, we are affiliated with the Mayo Clinic and the University of Central Florida. This includes the opportunity to do away rotations at Mayo Clinic, interact with visiting professors, share educational resources such as “Ask Mayo Expert”, and research collaborations.


How much "scut" work will I have to do?

We have ample ancillary services such as phlebotomy, transporters, EKG and radiology technicians which decreases “scut” work to a minimum.


What is the application deadline ?

The application deadline is October 31, 2023


Do you sponsor J1 or H1 visa?

We only sponsor J1.


Do you require Step 3?

Passing Step 3 is not a requirement to apply to our program. We would like to see Step 3 taken early in your training.


What is the cap on the number of admissions?

In general, you can expect to admit one patient when on early- or mid-call and 2 patients on late call. You do not admit on post-call days.


Is there a specific resident selection criteria ?

NCH Internal Medicine Residency Program selects from among eligible applicants on the basis of their preparedness and anticipated ability to be successful in the program. Academic performance during medical school, USMLE/COMLEX scores, scholarly contributions, recommendation letters, and the personal statement are among the considerations reviewed in selecting candidates to interview. Skills that align with our institutional mission and best serve our patient population are also considerations.


What is the call cycle?

We have a rotating 4-day admitting call cycle; Early-, Mid-, Late-, Post-call.


Do you support outside electives?

Yes, outside elective opportunities are available with sufficeint educational justification. We have had several residents do electives at other institutions.


Will you review my credentials prior to my submission so I know whether I should apply?

We review each application in its entirety once submitted on ERAS, and invite candidates we feel would be a good fit in our program.


Accreditation?

Our program is accredited with commendation through the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)


What is the board score cutoff?

USMLE Step 1: 210, USMLE Step 2: 220, COMLEX Part 1: 500, COMLEX Part 2: 500


When are interviews conducted?

For the 2023-2024 Application Season, interviews will be held virtually on select Tuesdays and Fridays, beginning in October and running through January, via Zoom


How interview will be conducted for this 2023-2024 Match season ?

The interview day will be conducted virtually. You will receive an itinerary the week before your interview by email from the Residency Coordinator.


When will I find out if I am invited for an Interview?

We will be sending an invitation for a number of applicants by October 13 and the rest before mid-November.


How many interns do you accept?

We accept 16 categorical interns.


How many patients will I be responsible for?

Our wards rotations are designed after the Mayo clinic rotations. Interns have a "soft cap" of 8 patients with a "hard cap" of 10 (ie. room for readmissions). Seniors can expect to see a maximum of 10 patients on their own and 16 when supervising Interns.


Are all patients teaching patients?

The hospital has a large patient volume. Thus, residents do not provide coverage for all admitted patients. Our residents cover the patients that are admitted to the teaching floor teams only.


Are there any fellowships available at your institution?

We currently offer ACGME accredited fellowship training in cardiology, pulmonary diases and critical care medicine, and hospice and palliative care.


Is U.S. clinical experience required ?

U.S. clinical experience is not a requirement. However, we assess the overall strength of the application as well as the competitiveness of the applicants to the program in the given year; thus, U.S. clinical experience is encouraged.


What is the graduation cutoff?

Applicants must have completed medical school within 5 years of the start of residency, so applicants for the 2024 class must have completed medical school no earlier than 2019.
